Orientation of the activity
Hadia Medical Swiss is working together with the University Hospital Basel to improve the health care system in Somaliland. In particular, we support local forces that are fighting against female genital mutilation (FMH) and want to reduce maternal and infant mortality.
Gabiley Hospital
At the request of the Ministry of Health (MoHD), we brought the infrastructure of this hospital up to the desired level and organised courses in emergency aid. The project objectives were achieved in 2019 and the project was then completed (and is still successful in 2024)
Balimataan Primary School
At the request of the local population, we built a school building and a dormitory for boys and girls in Balimataan. This means that in addition to the lower levels, the upper classes of the primary school can also be taught in Balimataan. The teaching is carried out by local staff. The project was successfully completed in 2018 and continues to run sustainably.
During the 2018 drought, we secured food for around 500 people in Balimataan for three months until government aid arrived.
Simulation training at Edna Adan University Hospital
Together with the University Hospital of Basel, we organised te simulation training courses in pregnancy support and obstetric assistance for medical staff from all over the country from 2019 to the end of 2023. Around 300 medical staff attended the training courses during this period.
The universities of Borama and Hargeisa and the Hargeisa Group Hospital (university hospital) now offer these simulation courses themselves in the local language.
These courses will be continued as part of the Salahley program.
Salahley Programme
The further development of medical support takes place in the Salahley programme.
The Salahley programme is building up health care in the most neglected area of Somaliland, the Salahley region on the border with Ethiopia. The client and the project owner is the Somaliland Ministry of Health (see letter below). A Somali NGO, the Excellence Development Organisation (EDO), founded specifically for this purpose, is responsible for project management and implementation on site. It is organised across clans and has a board of eight members. Its CEO, Idil Ismail Muse Nur, is also the representative of Hadia/USB and AN-NYA Foundation in Somaliland.
